RESNICK WILL NOT SEEK ANOTHER TERM
42-Year Career As Prosecutor and Judge

For Immediate Release                                                         Date : January 14, 2006

STATEHOUSE – Justice Alice Robie Resnick announced she would not seek re-election today after 42-years as a Prosecutor and Judge.

“It is with a combination of pleasure and sadness that I announce my decision not to seek a fourth term on the Supreme Court of Ohio. It is a pleasure because, after 42 years spent on the bench, I eagerly anticipate the prospect of pursing interests that I simply have not had time to pursue. It is with sadness because I have always found my work very satisfying and fulfilling.”

Resnick retires after 17 years on the high court and said it is time to give a new generation a seat at “one of the most gratifying and humbling tables in Ohio. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to play a part in deciding a great many issues concerning Ohioans.  I will miss the daily challenges of the position. My decision is my own – I am confident in my ability to be re-elected, but for every Justice there is a time to lay down the gavel and in my case make up for lost time with my husband Mel, my family, my friends, my dogs and my home.”

Justice Resnick was re-elected in 2000 in a campaign long remembered for the controversial independent expenditure campaign that became a national focus because of the negative attacks against her. “She stood tall in the saddle throughout and persevered and won one of the sweetest and most just victories in Ohio history,” said Chris Redfern, Chair of the Ohio Democratic Party.

“Alice Resnick will be remembered for always siding with justice for Ohioans of all ages, races and economic conditions,” said Redfern. “It did not matter where you came from, what your background was, or what side of the aisle you were on, Alice Resnick saw the law through a prism of what is right and what is just for children and families.”

Justice Resnick served 42-years in law enforcement, the last 30 as a Judge or Justice after having started her career as an Assistant Prosecutor in Lucas County. Justice Resnick was first elected Judge of the Toledo Municipal Court in 1975. She served two terms on the Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals beginning in 1982. She was elected to the Ohio Supreme Court in 1988 and re-elected in 1994 and 2000. The Ohio Women’s Bar Association presents each year the Alice Robie Resnick Outstanding Lawyer award in her honor.

“Alice Resnick never backed down from a fight,” said Redfern. “Let me end the speculation – the only reason Alice Resnick is retiring is that she chose to retire. She has always handled adversity and won. She would have won handily again.”

Justice Resnick was the fourth women elected to a statewide office in Ohio and only the second women elected to the Supreme Court of Ohio back in 1988. Today, the majority of the Ohio Court is female.

Among her many accomplishments is her work as founder and co-chair of the Ohio State Bar Association/ Supreme Court of Ohio Joint Task Force on Gender Fairness. A final report was issued in May 1995.
